Xamk’s Procurement Specialist Nuutti Teräsalmi: “I Feel That I Am Trusted”

Nuutti Teräsalmi has worked at Xamk and its predecessor, Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences, for just over 10 years. In Xamk’s procurement unit, Nuutti handles public procurement and related tender offer processes in accordance with procurement legislation.

Procurement gradually became a part of his job. His studies in information and archive management at Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences initially led him to work in IT.

“I had a desire to work in IT. I worked as an IT support and specialist. Gradually, procurement tasks started to land on my desk in those earlier roles,” Nuutti recalls.

The work of a procurement specialist is both social and independent.

“I advise Xamk staff on smaller procurements. I really enjoy the advisory part – you get to meet people. The staff here are nice, smart, and professional,” he says with appreciation.

Handling larger procurement’s tender offers requires peace and focus.

“I’m a fairly calm and contemplative person. Maybe that suits this role,” Nuutti reflects.

Xamk Is a Great Place to Work

Nuutti Teräsalmi found his way to Mamk and later Xamk the traditional way – through a job posting on the employment office’s website. At the time, he had another job opportunity as well, but the university of applied sciences won the competition. His initial title was “Buyer.”

“I decided to choose Mamk because I had the impression it was a good place to work. And I haven’t regretted it – Mamk and now Xamk have indeed been great places to work.”

What Nuutti values most at Xamk is the trust and care shown. It’s also important that there’s a healthy balance between work and free time. When personal life is in good shape, employees have more energy and contribute more to their workplace.

“My supervisor and others are skilled and professional. It’s clear that staff are valued and well taken care of. I feel that my employer trusts me. There’s no need for someone constantly looking over my shoulder,” he describes.

Free Time on the lake

In his free time, Nuutti most enjoys boating with his family. Boating has been a beloved hobby since childhood. His father used to have a slow motorboat, and the love of boating has stayed with him ever since.

His favorite shores and views are found on Lake Saimaa, particularly around Luonteri.

“Being in nature relaxes and calms me. I could stare at a lake view for hours.”
