Direct vitality impacts
The Mikkeli area experiences direct vitality impacts, including Xamk’s employment effect, with a steadily growing number of staff and paid taxes. Additionally, Xamk’s purchases and investments have a significant indirect impact on employment in the Mikkeli area and the purchasing power of the employed.
The impact of the university of applied sciences is also assessed based on the attractiveness of degree programs, the employment-promoting effect of education, business-renewing education, and research, development, and innovation (RDI) activities.
Xamk renews the business world
We have close connections with significant employers in the region of South Savo, and our role as a source of highly educated workforce in the region is undeniable.
In 2023, there were over 2,800 primary applicants to degree programs in Mikkeli, with 31% from the South Savo and Kymenlaakso regions and 69% from outside these regions.
Annually, more than 820 new professionals graduate from Xamk in Mikkeli across various fields, with an excellent employment rate.
Many graduates find employment in Mikkeli as environmental engineers, community educators, public health nurses, social workers, business administrators, and nurses.
The degrees meet the future needs of the job market, and studies can also include an entrepreneurship path.

Applied Development with RDI Expertise
Xamk’s applied research and development work is the most multidisciplinary and extensive among Finnish universities of applied sciences. The research is directly aimed at solving problems and developing the operations of companies and public organizations in the region.
Through its RDI activities, Xamk builds the region’s future success factors and supports the green transition. The collaboration creates jobs, innovations, and new entrepreneurship in the Mikkeli area.
We have five research units in Mikkeli:
Active Life Lab – Data-based wellbeing services
Digitalia – Digital information management research centre
Juvenia – Youth research and development centre
Mikpolis – Material and manufacturing engineering expertise
Xentre – Business and innovation research and education
Kalevankangas: A platform for well-being and business growth
Kalevankangas in Mikkeli is an oasis for city residents and a hub for research and business in well-being services, actively promoted by Xamk. The Active Life Lab research and development unit supports local companies in growing their well-being business.
Solutions for digital information management
The easy availability of digital materials fosters new research and business based on it. The Digitalia research center, a collaboration between Xamk, the University of Helsinki, and the National Library of Finland, develops digital information management solutions to ensure the reliability and preservation of used information far into the future.
Enhancing youth well-being through new research insights
Juvenia is a renowned youth research and development center. It rapidly translates impactful new knowledge into developing youth services, decision-making, and practices. Funders include ELY Centers, Kela, the Ministry of Education and Culture, the Finnish National Agency for Education, the Academy of Finland, and the Ministry of the Environment.
Expert RDI competence for over 20 years
Mikpolis, located on Xamk’s Mikkeli campus, is a research, development, and innovation unit that supports customers’ RDI activities and expertise in material and manufacturing technologies. Our unit has extensive knowledge in mechanical, material, and manufacturing technology, built over more than two decades.
Support for entrepreneurship through education and expert services
The changing business environment needs entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial thinking. The Xentre Research and Training Unit for Entrepreneurship and Innovations increases regional vitality by offering expert services, student collaboration, and cooperation and experimentation environments for companies. Promoting growth entrepreneurship and new business ventures is at the core of our operations.
