For several consecutive years, Xamk has been selected as the best university of applied sciences in Finland. We have an excellent reputation that supports not only our campus cities but also the entire region. Our students are visible in many ways in the cityscape and enliven the atmosphere.

Direct vitality impacts
The Savonlinna area experiences direct vitality impacts, including Xamk’s employment effect, with a steadily growing number of staff and paid taxes. Additionally, Xamk’s purchases and investments have a significant indirect impact on employment in the Savonlinna area and the purchasing power of the employed.
The impact of the university of applied sciences is also assessed based on the attractiveness of degree programs, the employment-promoting effect of education, business-renewing education, and research, development, and innovation (RDI) activities.
Xamk renews the business world
We have close connections with significant employers in the region of South Savo, and our role as a source of highly educated workforce in the region is undeniable.
Degree programs bring a significant number of new students to Savonlinna annually, and many of them remain in the area after graduation. In 2023, more than 500 primary applicants applied to degree programs in Savonlinna, with 56% coming from outside Xamk’s operating region.
Annually, more than 150 new professionals graduate from the Savonlinna campus across various fields, with an excellent employment rate. Over half of the graduates report their residence as South Savo a year after graduation.
Many Xamk graduates find employment in Savonlinna as nurses, tourism management professionals, public health nurses, and business administrators.

Applied Development with RDI Expertise
Xamk’s applied research and development work is the most multidisciplinary and extensive among Finnish universities of applied sciences. The research is directly aimed at solving problems and developing the operations of companies and public organizations in the region.
Through its RDI activities, Xamk builds the region’s future success factors and supports the green transition. The collaboration creates jobs, innovations, and new entrepreneurship in the Mikkeli area.
Four of our research units operate in Savonlinna:
Electronics 3K Fctory – Electronics training, development and production services
FibreLab – Bioproduct technology innovation centre
Industrial Wood Construction Laboratory – Developing, testing and piloting wood constructions
Xentre – Business and innovation research and education
Supporting the growth of the regional electronics industry
The Electronics 3K Factory supports the growth of the regional electronics industry. The 3K Factory enables product manufacturing from prototypes to series production and testing. The unit offers companies research, development, manufacturing, and training services in electronics, as well as environmental testing, X-ray inspection, and other electronics testing services. Annually, around 50-70 companies collaborate with us.
Researching future bioproduct processes
The FibreLab develops new uses for wood fiber, more efficient processing methods, and new products and businesses. The research also focuses on the water purification processes of the forest industry and technological solutions for utilizing side streams. A new initiative includes international cooperation in textile waste recycling. The activities are strongly business-oriented.
Development and testing of wood structures on an industrial scale
The Industrial Wood Construction Laboratory offers companies top-notch equipment, a piloting environment, and expert service. The laboratory enables the development and testing of wood structures on a real scale. The technical performance of the entire structure can be determined, optimizing material use and improving construction efficiency.
Support for entrepreneurship through education and expert services
The changing business environment needs entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial thinking. The Xentre Research and Training Unit for Entrepreneurship and Innovations increases regional vitality by offering expert services, student collaboration, and cooperation and experimentation environments for companies. Promoting growth entrepreneurship and new business ventures is at the core of our operations.
