Our research, development, and innovation (RDI) activities also play a significant role in strengthening vitality, as we are the largest RDI university of applied sciences in Finland. We work for the benefit of our regions together with our partner network.

Attractiveness and retention in Southeast Finland
As a local university, we are an important partner for our campus cities and regions, South Savo and Kymenlaakso. We promote the success of our region in close cooperation with the business and economic sectors. Our common goal is to ensure that there is enough skilled workforce living here, our region’s economic structure is diverse, and companies have good opportunities to develop and succeed.
We also strongly invest in internationalization, which strengthens the vitality of our regions as those who come here to study and work settle down. By supporting work and education-based immigration, we also meet national goals. International impact also arises through higher education cooperation and networking.
We produce future professionals to meet the needs of the workforce through degree education and continuous learning.
Our RDI expertise directly targets the development of the region’s economy and supports responsibility and the green transition. In 2023, our RDI activities received 19.3 million euros in external funding for regional development – this amount is among the national leaders.
Our activities positively affect the competitiveness, mental climate, and regional image of our campus cities.
Our economic impact on our regions in 2023
Our direct vitality impacts include Xamk’s employment effect, i.e., the number of staff, the tax revenues generated, the investments directed to the region, and the purchase of services. In 2023, the amount of investments was 7.2 million euros, service purchases 14.5 million euros, and taxes paid by staff 4 million euros.
Xamk’s purchases and investments have an indirect impact on regional employment and increased purchasing power.
