The research and development work in the Effective Wellbeing Services aims to deliver solutions that promote health and wellbeing, and to create new business, working places and service expertise in the South-Savo region of Finland.
Wellbeing services shall be more preventive and research-based in order to better address the growing public health challenges in our society. Therefore, the Effective Wellbeing Services aim to explore and develop innovative ways to promote health and wellbeing from individual, community and environmental perspectives. By applying researched and measured data, we can better target services and interventions, and ensure having sufficient resources for attending to global health and wellbeing.
Our wellbeing research reshapes the world
Active Life Lab is research unit located at Saimaa Stadium multi-arena in Mikkeli, Finland. It forms the vital center for the effective wellbeing services. The Active Life Lab concentrates on impactful research, development and innovation activities, conducting wellbeing research to reshape the world. It serves as a forerunner in the research and development of data-driven wellbeing services, in collaboration with local, national and international organisations.
Our research and development activities focus on the renewal of small and medium-sized enterprises and on creating solutions for the challenges of the data economy, the green transition and sustainable wellbeing. At the Active Life Lab, we believe that the evolving wellbeing challenges can be addressed through sustainable and impactful solutions, based on high quality research and data.
We promote wellbeing by implementing high-quality research into practice
Concepts of good life and a sustainable planet must be approached holistically – from the perspective of the individual, the community and the environment. We conduct research and development in multi-professional teams having versatile, extensive and long-term expertise. This creates opportunities to explore and develop solutions for health and wellbeing challenges from a variety of perspectives. Our research teams are featured with a burning passion for finding new methods and practical tools to promote wellbeing.
We produce innovative solutions in order to promote public health, develop wellbeing services, and prove their effectiveness. We conduct multidisciplinary and impactful research, continuously implementing our findings into practice. We seek for concrete, applicable tools to enhance wellbeing. This requires cutting-edge knowledge and skills to guide action, decision-making and resourcing of the health and wellbeing services.

As a research, development and innovation unit specialized in Effective Wellbeing Services, our key responsibilities are to

- enrich the service production and entrepreneurship in co-operation with the related organisations in the South Savo.
We work for strengthening the vitality of our region. We aim to overcome the challenges related to ageing, physical, mental and social wellbeing of the population. Through our work, we help the inhabitants of South Savo to lead a good and high-quality life. For the purpose, we operate in close collaboration with the industry stakeholders in the public, private and 3rd sector, assisting them them in improving their services. We believe we can make a direct and indirect impact on the wellbeing of individuals, and act as a driving force for public health by implementing the results of our work into practice.
Strong local knowledge combined with international approach is a winning combination
Our teams in Effective Wellbeing Services work in collaboration with different national and international actors in the wellbeing sector. We are an internationally appreciated research and development unit, having close relationships to many research organisations worldwide.
We are building a wellbeing industry ecosystem in the South Savo region, aiming at a multidisciplinary, clustered and internationalizing co-operation structure in the field. We are boosting the vitality of the Development Platform of the City of Mikkeli, by helping companies to relocate and connect to the area, and to increase employment. Furthermore, we contribute to the implementation of the South Savo Smart Specialization strategy by developing and distributing our high level wellbeing expertise and education in the field for the benefit of the industry.
We aim to ensure that the demand for the top class wellbeing services will be retained now and in the future – also for exporting.
