Virtual Shelter

Experience the responsibilities of a civil defense personel.

This project implements a VR headset-based simulator designed to train users in the use and management of a civil defense shelter and various safety scenarios from the perspective of a shelter supervisor.

Experience and learn how to act in a civil defense shelter during a hypothetical emergency situation.

Immersive Learning Environment

The virtual civil defense shelter simulator offers the opportunity to practice civil defense operations using VR headsets. Simultaneously, the actions can be observed on an external screen, allowing multiple individuals to learn the key tasks of a shelter supervisor.

A new, immersive experience

Teemu Veneskari, Kymenlaakso Rescue Services

In the simulator, you will complete tasks and guide other characters to act correctly in various protective scenarios. This aims to create an authentic shelter environment where the diverse personalities of characters provide a more genuine gaming experience.

Project Key Actions

  • Test functionalities according to current regulations and practice interactively.
  • Introduce gamified elements, such as interactive virtual characters, allowing players to solve challenges presented by shelter occupants.
  • Aim to model the simulation process with several differently sized virtual shelters to gather information for further development and expansion.
  • Ensure that the simulator includes the correct quantity and types of equipment and supplies per regulations (considering the construction year of the shelter affects required equipment).
  • Pilot various possibilities for utilizing different data models using existing datasets (e.g. digital city models).
