Sustainable accessibility of South Savo
by sharing rides efficiently
The project examines the functionality of digital ride-sharing services as a complement to private travel chains.
By opening the door to our own travel, we can together achieve a wider travel area in a more environmentally friendly and efficient way. Carpooling is a social boost to the day and enables lower-emission, more economical, and more efficient mobility.
Shared rides are a promising and highly cost-effective mobility solution and approach
Shared rides – the new tomorrow.
By sharing rides offered by private car owners already on the road, we strengthen climate resilience and promote adaptation to climate change through an energy-efficient mobility solution and approach.
The operating costs of private car use decrease as the number of passengers increases. Accessibility in South Savo improves both for commuting and service trips, as well as for leisure travel, such as trips to summer cottages. Shared rides can also complement the transportation needs of tourists arriving in South Savo from other parts of Finland to their destinations.
In rural areas, distances are longer and public transportation services are limited. With shared rides, we can improve and supplement ride availability outside of urban areas. Commuting costs for those working in rural areas or traveling for services can be halved or significantly reduced.
Shared rides foster community, social interaction, and inclusion.
Digital ride-sharing services create new opportunities to travel in a more environmentally friendly way while saving costs! The ride-sharing service fosters community, inclusion, and also contributes to supply security during exceptional situations. Through carpooling, we are moving towards a safer, more economical, and greener tomorrow!
Key actions of the project
The project maps the needs and barriers to using ride-sharing services for residents and visitors in the region, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), as well as the public and third sectors. It will develop and pilot the features of a service management system that can address these needs and obstacles.
The project will also test communication methods to encourage residents, consumers, businesses, and communities to make use of more cost-effective accessibility quickly and at the scale required by business operations. The outcome of the project will be an open operational model for organizing shared rides.
Through digital ride-sharing services, the mobility of target groups will be streamlined for work and service-related travel in South Savo, in a cost-effective manner.
Easier access to work and business services
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Mauris ex felis, facilisis The main target group of the project consists of employees of businesses and organizations as well as service users. The goal is to combine their travel needs so that work and service-related trips heading in the same direction can be carried out through shared rides. Especially in rural areas, the use of personal cars is often necessary, but shared rides can significantly reduce costs.
The project’s objective is to improve public sector operations, business activities—particularly for SMEs—and increase their productivity. This will be achieved by implementing a ride-sharing service that serves employees’ commuting and customers’ service-related trips. Cost-effective accessibility enables the development of new products, services, and production methods, and the ride-sharing service can help create customer communities or business networks. Additionally, the service will enhance supply security.
To achieve these goals, the project will focus on improving the accessibility of local public and private sector workplaces and services, as well as complementing public transportation networks. During and after the project, the aim is to create a sustainable operational model for shared rides that is open to all stakeholders.
The project also aims to increase the usage rate of personal cars for work and customer trips to and from the region and from other parts of Finland. This will improve profitability and reduce carbon dioxide emissions per passenger and per passenger kilometer.

Improved Accessibility of Public Services
The secondary target group of the project consists of residents in areas poorly served by public transportation, particularly those who do not have the ability to use a private car. The public service transport networks in rural areas do not widely cover people living in the countryside, so complementing Kela transport services and providing shared rides for social welfare services could be improved. Additionally, the target group includes people arriving from other parts of Finland to South Savo, including summer residents. Car drivers can also benefit from the project by switching from using a private car for long-distance trips to a transportation chain that relies on public transport, where the ride-sharing service can be used for the connecting transport portion.
The project addresses the issue of affordable accessibility to workplaces and services on an individual level.
