Reducing harmful wastewater substances by improving monitoring

Reducing Harmful Substances in Urban Wastewater by Improving Monitoring – Vemo project reduces the entry of harmful substances into wastewater. A joint project between South-East Finland University of Applied Sciences and LUT University surveys the sources of emissions of harmful substances and the quality of sewage water in the case target areas in the city of Mikkeli.

The project is completed.

Monitoring The quantity and quality of emissions

The Vemo project develops methods for examining the quantity and quality of pollutants entering wastewater by emission source. The work packages of the project are:
1) Inventory of pollutants by emission source
2) Online monitoring and transport of contaminants
3) Exploration and piloting of special wastewater treatment processes on a laboratory scale
4) Communication, implementation of results and reporting.

New information on contaminant management

The treatment and reduction of harmful substances in wastewater at their original source contributes to more cost-effective wastewater management. With the help of more accurate observation and identification of emission sources, the removal of various pollutants can be focused already at the emission source and thus the amount of pollutants in municipal wastewater treatment plants can be reduced.

The Ministry of the Environment is funding the Vemo project from the Water Protection Program with 280 000 euros.
