ARVOHIILI
Higher value added biochar and its value chains – ARVOHIILI
In ARVOHIILI project, biochar is studied to develop biochar based products with higher value.
Goals of the ARVOHIILI project
The main goal of the ARVOHIILI project is to diversify and strengthen the regional economy by creating new business opportunities and jobs, as well as by raising the level of expertise.
The innovation solutions related to the production and use of biochar will create business opportunities both for companies already located and for companies that are considering locating in the area.
What will be done during the project?
As a result of the project, new raw material flows to produce biochar will be found, the processing degree of the biochar will be increased, new applications will be found, and a market will be created for biochar products.
Biochar is more about a product group than an individual product, because the properties of biochar are influenced by, among other things, the raw material used, its pre-treatment, pyrolysis processing parameters and post-treatment. For this reason, the production of optimal biochar is a complex process, where several factors need to be addressed. The potential uses of biochar are also versatile, because the properties can be modified according to the needs set by applications. During the project, following applications are considered:
- Air filtering/cleaning
- Acoustics
- Circular economy based fertilizers and substrates
- Replacing fossil fuels
Different raw materials, such as willow, different wood based side streams and wastes originated in different industries, and plastic waste originated in agriculture and farming, are studied to define the suitable pyrolysis processing parameters to reach the required quality for each application. Different pre-treatment methods of materials will be also tested and developed. During the project, guidelines for quality verification of the biochar production including required quality characteristics and recommended analysis and testing methods to be used.
News
During the project, biochar has been produced from different raw materials, such as willow and bark side streams originated in forest industry. The pyrolysis processing parameters have been tested with different materials, and these materials have been tested using different temperatures.
The biochar has been produced and analysed at Research Centre for bio and circular economy BioSampo. Among other things, the chemical composition has been studied with CHNS elemental analyzer, and the specific surface area with BET-analyzer. Samples have also been studied with Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FE-SEM).
Growing experiments of different kinds of plants and biochar have been performed at BioSampo. Biochar was produced from different raw materials. The growing experiments will continue during the summer.
