South Savo Artificial Intelligence at Memory Lab
The project will create new artificial intelligence (AI) expertise in the South Savo region, promote the responsible utilization of AI in companies, develop methods especially related to AI technologies, and accelerate business by supporting the renewal of the service and business structure.
The project will be implemented as a joint project between Xamk, the National Library of Finland and Central Archives for Finnish Business Records (ELKA).

Background
Artificial intelligence (AI) technology enables the creation of novel service products and entry into new markets. While AI applications have become a part of our daily lives, the utilization of emerging AI in business remains limited.
Harnessing the power of contemporary AI language models requires expertise and infrastructure, especially when adhering to data privacy and reliability standards. AI also demands substantial amounts of data which individual actors or companies may not necessarily have access to.
In the past, South Savo has not had its own custom AI but with this project there will be.
The potential of AI in business and operational development is huge and new areas of application are constantly being discovered
The project supports the development and application of AI-based methods in companies, memory organizations and research, development and innovation (RDI) actors in the Southern Savo region. At the same time, the possibilities of using the available archived content become known.
The actions and results of the project support regional actors and companies in identifying the potential of using AI in their business and strengthen the construction of a secure data environment in South Savo and Memory Lab, reinforcing the Finnish “AI resilience”.
Project objectives
The main objectives of the project are create conditions for the development of new AI-based product and service innovations, enhance AI expertise in South Savo, and amplify the impact of the Memory Lab investment as a platform for data-driven business development.
Achieving these objectives is made possible through the implementation of a secure and customizable language model and innovative approaches to applying existing digital content in our region.
The sub-objectives are
1. Increase the awareness of the potential of AI and digital content in companies and business operations
2. To provide actors in the region with their own language model and its applications to support product and service development in the Memory Lab
3. Support companies and experts to find new opportunities for utilizing AI and digital materials in business
4. Increase the innovation, growth, and marketing capabilities of businesses in the region, connected to the latest digitalization opportunities in product and service innovations
The key actions of the project
- Building new partnerships in information management 1) by expanding the target groups of Digitalia’s RDI activities, 2) by compiling new development ideas in a business-oriented manner, and 3) by making the services of the project and Memory Lab more accessible to actors and companies in the region
- Creating an operating model by which actors and companies can evaluate and unlock the potential of historical digital materials in their business, especially in the Mikkeli region and more widely in South Savo
- Maintenance, testing and further education of South Savo’s own language model in Memory Lab
- Refinement of existing digital content in our area with AI
- Creating South Savo Living Archive = offering ready-to-use digital content in the South Savo Living Archive
- Applying language models and utilize generative AI as as the foundation for new services in the region
- Promoting the responsible utilization of AI and supporting more sustainable development of AI-based services in Memory Lab and South Savo
The project results
As a result of the project, new AI expertise has been created in the South Savo region and the responsible use of AI has been promoted.
The capacity of regional actors and companies in South Savo to identify new opportunities for utilizing AI and existing historical materials in their business has improved and awareness of AI has increased.
The further-educated South Savo’s own language model and its applications related to AI technologies are used by experts, actors and companies in the Memory Lab to support the development of new product and service concepts.
The ability of the region RDI operations to serve companies in utilizing AI has also improved.
