Green energy system and new sector integration value chains – GENESIS + investments

In GENESIS- project the main goal is to develop sustainable future for energy sector with new, international level, energy technology research laboratory.

Research infrastructure strengthens regional energy technology research possibilities

New research infrastructure for energy technology

The GENESIS project is developing a sustainable future for the energy sector. The goal is to create new business, investments, and jobs in the Kymenlaakso region. The innovations developed in the project will support the production, storage, and use of clean energy, as well as sector integration.

In the investment portion of the GENESIS project, a unique research and pilot environment will be built, which will help achieve the aforementioned objectives. The investment portion will involve the construction of a comprehensive system that takes sector integration into account, where energy will be produced and stored in various forms. In terms of production, the focus will be on small-scale alternatives, such as solar power and small wind power. The excess heat generated from the solar panels will also be captured and stored, which can be used for heating laboratory spaces. One of the production systems will also include hydrogen equipment that can produce hydrogen, store it, and convert the stored energy back into electricity. Heat recovery will also be developed for hydrogen production, and its utilization in combination with other surplus heat sources will be investigated. The environment will also allow for the storage of electricity in battery storage systems, which can be used optimally according to the fluctuating electricity market. The automation system will control the overall system and aim to gather information on the operation and economic profitability of the sector-integrated system.

Most of the investments will be implemented during 2024, with installation work primarily in the first quarter of 2025. The design and implementation of the automation system will take place in 2025. The system built through these investments will be utilized in the development project’s activities.

Main actions of the project

  1. Planning, building and developing the RDI and testing environment for sustainable energy system and sector integration research and piloting

2. Integrating sustainable energy systems research with geoenergy research

3. Validating the operation of RDI environment for demonstrations

4. Clean energy and sector integration demos and simulations planning and implementation

5. Improving conditions for local businesses by making preliminary business plans for implementing sector integration and executing technology piloting.

6. Improve green transition investments’, especially for hydrogen and solar power, possibilities to be located in Kymenlaakso region.

Kouvola Innovation Oy is carrying out a part project, which is focusing on actions 5 ja 6.
