Co-funded by the EU South Savo Regional Council

BioSavo – From the BioLuuppi Demonstration Environment to the world

BioSavo project supports circular and bio economy, cleantech and carbon cycle related Research, Development, and Innovation activity by developing biogas production and nutrient cycle in South Savo region with new product concepts.

Efficient biogas production and nutrient recycling

New research data and operating models for the biogas process

The BioSavo project studies the effects of storing biowaste and other organic materials on biogas production. The amount of separately collected bio-waste increases with stricter recycling goals and legislation, which means that the importance of storage is also emphasized. Frozen or moldy bio-waste can cause problems for the biogas process, but so far little research data is available on these effects. The laboratory and pilot-scale biogas tests of the BioSavo project provide new information on these effects and, search solutions for storing materials.

Efficient nutrient recycling

The digestates of biogas plants are rich in nutrients but there are still many challenges to utilise digestates. Research and new concepts are needed in order to efficiently and fully exploit the potential hidden in the nutrients of biowaste, sewage sludge and other side streams in accordance with the principles of the circular economy. In the BioSavo project, product concepts and recipes for combining digestates and industrial side streams are developed together with companies. In addition, technologies and solutions for removing plastic and other impurities in biowaste digestate will be investigated to improve its quality.

New biowaste containers from plant-based composite materials

The BioSavo project is developing new product ideas for biowaste collection from plant-based composite materials. The commonly used biowaste bags made of biodegradable plastic do not decompose quickly enough in the biogas process and cause problems for the equipment. The collection containers developed in the project are planned to be suitable to the biogas process.

Regional and international cooperation

In the BioLuuppi – Demonstration Environment for material flows of Circular Economy project, a new type of demonstration-scale research environment was established in Mikkeli’s EcoSairila area. It enables the formation of a national and international business and research network in the biogas sector in the South Savo region.

The BioSavo project utilises the BioLuuppi environment in biogas research and promotes the internationalisation of the South Savo region in the biogas sector through communication and networking. The project collaborates closely with the Blue Economy Mikkeli and the EcoSairila, as well as companies such as Metsäsairila Ltd, BioSairila Ltd and Juvan Bioson Ltd.
