Bioproduct technology

Welcome to Xamk!

Xamk is a higher education institution offering studies in English in many different study fields. We have campuses in the towns of Kotka, Kouvola, Mikkeli and Savonlinna, located in the beautiful region of South-Eastern Finland. Students from partner institutions of Xamk are welcome to apply for the exchange studies in Bioproduct technology.

If you wish to have more information about the content of the programme or exchange studies available, please ask more!

Content of studies

Bioproduct technology focuses on the research into and development of products made of biomass that are durable and can be used to replace products made of plastic and cotton. The business prospects in the forest industry are based on paper, packaging materials and wood products. Several new products are currently being evolved for utilising traditional forest industry processes and the fibres and chemical compounds of wood. Bioproduct technology comprises all technical solutions applied in these processes.

The core of this bachelor’s degree engineering programme consists of process technologies, especially the utilisation of raw wood material in the manufacture of various products. By means of process technology, natural raw materials are turned into end products necessary in our daily lives, such as magazines, textiles, health care products and biofuels.

Modes of mobility

Exchange studies

The focus of studies is in bioproduct technology courses. You can apply for the autumn term, spring term or the whole academic year. It is possible to complete 30 ECTS credits or more per semester. Language of instructions is English.

Learning in the Fibre Laboratory

Bioproduct engineering studies are conducted on Savonlinna Campus and in the Fiber Laboratory. The Fiber Laboratory is a research unit at Xamk focused on the research, development and innovation of industrial processes in cooperation with companies in the fields of pulp and paper technology, water treatment processes and refining of biomaterials.

The Fiber Laboratory was expanded in the spring of 2018 when the new FIBRE3 building was introduced. The FIBRE3 building houses classrooms, self-study spaces and chemical laboratories as well as a process pilot hall. Students also benefit from the use of process simulation and diagnostics software.

Savonlinna is a city of strong business activities related to forest industry, and the Fiber Laboratory owned by Xamk works in close cooperation with the leading companies in the field supporting their research, development and innovation projects.

The Fiber Laboratory and the new FIBRE3 building serve as an efficient and experimental learning environment, and as a student you have excellent opportunities to do project work and find a thesis topic within the scope of Fiber Laboratory research programmes related to bioproduct technology.
