Enrolment for attendance and non-attendance
Academic year is the time between 1.8. and 31.7. In order to keep the right to study and carry out studies, students have to enrol as attending (present) or non-attending (absent) every academic year, according to the academic year timetable. You can change your enrolment status for the spring semester on the dates which are listed in the academic year timetable. It is not possible to change the status after the enrolment has closed.
Only a student who has registered as attending has the right to pursue studies, to have credits entered in the record of credits and to receive guidance related to the studies. The attendance does not mean being physically present on campus: you enrol for attendance also for student exchange period or when completing practical training or writing your thesis.
Student, who has not enrolled for attendance or non-attendance every academic year by the deadline, loses the right to study. Student, who has failed to enrol, has a right to apply for restoration of study right from the director of education. It is not possible to restore the study right if the student’s study time has ended.
Students enrol for attendance and non-attendance through the Peppi system, except for non-attending students who use a separate form for the enrolment.

Information about non-attendance
Student enrolled for non-attedance
- has no right to use Xamk credentials or any systems that require a login with Xamk credentials.
- has no right pursue studies (at Xamk or Campusonline) during the time of non-attendance.
- has no right for the KELA financial aid or the daily supported meal.
- is also not entitled to any student benefits (e.g. travel discounts, use of the school’s internet facilities etc.).
When a student who has earlier been enrolled as an attending student, enrols for non-attendance, his/her username for Xamk systems is closed. This means that the student is unable to login to the systems and the mailbox for the email account will be out of use after 30 days. After returning to the studies as an attending student, the student username is back in use but the mailbox is recreated. The old mailbox and the messages in it are not saved when 30 days of non-attendance have passed.
Note!
Student enrolled for non-attendance for the whole academic year can return to continue his/her studies at the beginning of the next semester by enrolling for attendance. In this case, the Studies Coordinator must be contacted in order to check the study plan. The above mentioned case normally causes problems for the student: certain courses might have been rescheduled, the degree programme can be ended totally or it can be realised after years only.
Student enrolled for non-attendance is him/herself responsible for the continuation and progress of the studies because the courses offered to students can vary from one academic year to another.
A student can enrol for non-attendance for the maximum of one academic year (2 semesters), except for statutory reasons (completion of military service, civilian service or voluntary military service for women in Finland; or.maternity, paternity or parental leave). There is no maximum time for non-attendance on the basis of these legal grounds.
Grounds/reason for non-attendance
- First academic year: certificate required, not included in the semesters for non-attendance or the time of study right

- Other academic years/semesters: maximum time for non-attendance during the studies is two semesters, not included in the time of study right. No certificate needed.

The medical certificate must state which illness or injury the student suffers from, and that this condition prevents the student from beginning their studies on 1 January / 1 August. Obstacles caused by the practical arrangements required by the illness or injury: an adequate clarification, e.g. a certificate from the student housing foundation that the student is on the waiting list for an apartment required by his or her injury
