The Master’s degree program in Sports Medicine and Exercise Physiology is designed for those working independently or as part of an expert team in coaching or rehabilitation in the field of sports and physical activity.
During the program, you will deepen and expand your knowledge in measurement and assessment methods of exercise physiology, explore, and utilize the latest technology in the field.
Upon completing the Master’s degree, you will be at the forefront of the field’s development. You will be equipped to work independently or as part of an expert team in coaching or rehabilitation tasks as a specialist in sports medicine and exercise physiology. You will be able to utilize the latest evidence-based research in your work and apply research methods and technology from the sports and wellness field.
The key learning objectives of the program are:
- You understand various research methods and can utilize different information sources in the planning and execution of the research process, considering ethical aspects and evidence-based practice.
- You can use appropriate research concepts, refer to research data, and analyze data sets.
- You know the basics of business operations, legislation, and financial management in the sports and coaching industry.
- You can productize services in the sports and coaching field and understand the importance of productivity in your work.
- You can investigate and analyze research findings, and plan, implement, and evaluate rehabilitation based on evidence in the treatment and prevention of sports injuries.
- You are aware of the health effects of fitness and competitive sports and the most common health-related risk factors for fitness enthusiasts and athletes.
- You will deepen your knowledge of methods that affect performance in both fitness and competitive sports, and examine your own activities from an ethical perspective.
- You can work as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare expert group.
- You understand the importance of psychological factors on performance in sports and exercise.
- You can assess physical performance and use research results in the planning and implementation of training.
- You can utilize technological methods in measuring physical performance and critically evaluate the results.
- You understand the principles of planning and implementing training for physical attributes, and can create and execute training programs for different target groups.

Study contents
The studies in the master’s degree proramme in Sports medicine and exercise physiology total 90 ECTS credits are divided into three parts: core competence (40 ECTS credits), complementary competence (20 ECTS credits) and master’s thesis (30 ECTS credits).
- Theory and research methods in sports medicine and exercise physiology- 5 ECTS credits
- Entrepreneurship, leadership and self-leadership in sports and rehabilitation – 5 ECTS credits
- Advanced treatment methods in sports injuries- 10 ECTS credits
- Advanced treatment methods of common health conditions in physical activity and sports- 5 ECTS credits
- Psychological aspects in physical activity and sports- 5 ECTS credits
- Testing, measurement and assessment in rehabilitation, physical activity and sports- 5 ECTS credits
- Wellbeing technologies in sports medicine and exercise physiology- 5 ECTS credits

Implementation of studies
The duration of the studies is 2–3 years, and the studies are, as a rule, conducted flexibly online.
The degree programme includes one contact teaching period (3-4 days) at the beginning of the first academic year in autumn 2025 in Kotka.
