Strengthen Your Competence in Rehabilitation

Having completed these master’s degree studies, you are able to apply multidisciplinary and evidence-based knowledge and development methods, which strengthens your professional competence in rehabilitation practices and related research-oriented development activities.

You gain a deeper understanding of the health effects of interventions and technologies that aim to promote individual physical activity. You also receive the competence required in the management and reorganisation of rehabilitation practices.

In addition, the studies enhance your abilities to evaluate and improve the quality and effectiveness of client-oriented rehabilitation services. You also develop your skills to communicate and work in multidisciplinary national and international teams and networks in the field of rehabilitation.

Study contents

The studies in the master’s degree proramme in rehabilitation total 90 ECTS credits and are divided into three parts: core competence (45 ECTS credits), complementary competence (15 ECTS credits) and master’s thesis (30 ECTS credits).

  • Management of the promotion of physical activities 5 ECTS
  • Wellbeing technologies in rehabilitation 5 ECTS.
  • Multidisciplinary assessment of functional abilities 5 ECTS.
  • Basics and methods of research-oriented development 5 ECTS
  • Sustainability in rehabilitation management 5 ECTS

MASTER’S THESIS – 30 ECTS credits

COMPLEMENTARY COMPETENCE – 15 ECTS credits

You can choose complementary competence studies from a wide supply of Xamk Master School’s common studies according to your interests. 

These common studies cover courses both in Finnish and English and include the following:  

  • Research and development 
  • Management, leadership and entrepreneurship 
  • International working environments 
  • Information, digital services and networks. 

You can also choose complementary competence studies from other universities, if they are at the level of master’s degree.  

In case you have previously completed studies at the level of EQF 7, and they match the objectives of the degree, they can be accredited as part of your studies.  More information is provided by the Degree Programme Coordinator. 

Master´s thesis (30 ECTS credits)

The master’s thesis (30 ECTS credits) is an important part of your studies. Its topic should aim at developing your own work or the performance of a work community.  In the thesis study, you identify development needs in your professional field and plan and implement a related research or development process. You can also complete your thesis as part of Xamk’s RDI projects or as commissioned by one of the degree programme partners.   

The language of instruction is English. The tuition, assignments, exams and master’s thesis writing process are instructed, conducted and completed in English.

Implementation of studies

In total, the duration of studies ranges from two to three years (90 ECTS credits).

The degree programme studies are fully implemented through an online learning platform and online courses, including webinars, group meetings, project work, independent tasks and peer discussions.

Students must have a computer equipped with a webcam and software necessary in the studies and a microphone (headset).

Online lessons take place on predetermined days. The number of online lesson days is 2–3 per month for the first year and 1–2 for the second year.

You are advised to integrate report writing and other assignments into your own field of work with a focus on the development of rehabilitation practices.

The language of instruction is English. Tuition, assignments, exams and the master’s thesis writing process are instructed, conducted and completed in English.

Development-oriented approach to work  

Xamk has strong partnership relationships with the private, public and third sector. In terms of studies and practical training, privately owned companies, particularly in Kymenlaakso region, are considered the most important partners, but Xamk also cooperates with public sector organizations and constantly aims to expand its network of cooperation. 

The degree programme is multidisciplinary, providing you with the opportunity to meet professionals from various fields during your studies. Together with your teachers, they aim to encourage critical thinking and improve your argumentation skills. As a result, you do not only gain new perspectives to your own field, but also contribute to the development of other fields.  

The networks created with experts during the studies are also a considerable advantage for you after graduation. This is something that students graduating from Xamk Master School consider one of the most important aspects of the education.  

The Master’s programme at South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences – Xamk, offers an authentically international study environment with students and staff members coming from over 30 countries. 

At Master School, you learn to retrieve and process field-specific research data and apply it to your own work. Learning is research-based, development-oriented and aimed at promoting innovation.  

You can also carry out research work and other assignments as part of Xamk’s research, development and innovation (RDI) projects.  

RDI specialists are an essential part of Xamk Master School, building bridges with the world of work. Among Finnish universities of applied sciences, Xamk stands out as the largest in the field of RDI activities. The total number of ongoing projects per year is nearly 300.
