Combining Quality Education with Practical Experience
“One of the biggest surprises for me was the amount of support offered at Xamk. The teachers and staff are incredibly kind and supportive,” Genesis shares, reflecting on how this welcoming environment eased her transition to a new country.
Combining Quality Education with Practical Experience
Genesis appreciates the practical approach of Finnish education. At Xamk, the Nursing program blends theoretical knowledge with hands-on practice through internships in real healthcare environments.
“You learn best by doing, not just from books,” she explains.
The program also places a strong emphasis on learning Finnish, beginning in the first week of studies.
“The language is challenging but definitely possible to learn. I speak Finnish with friends and use apps like Duolingo and WordDive, which has helped me a lot,” she says.
Genesis also highlights the unique, innovative learning methods used in Finland.
“Me and my fellow students often talk about how mind-blowing the education here is. From the start, we engaged in hands-on experience, and the teachers take time to explain everything step by step, using cutting-edge technology and materials.”
Overcoming Challenges
Adjusting to life in Finland hasn’t been without its hurdles. The long, dark winter and cold weather came as a shock.
“I wasn’t prepared for the darkness; in November, it felt like it was always dark,” Genesis admits.
But she found help through Xamk’s Student Wellbeing Services, learning strategies like taking vitamin D* and spending more time outdoors with friends.
“The first winter was the hardest, but now it is much easier.”
She encourages other international students to stay patient and active.
“Participate in events and give yourself time to adapt to a new environment.”
Living in Finland has also brought Genesis closer to nature.
“The calm, serene environment has encouraged me to slow down, reflect, and appreciate the outdoors. Back in my home country Peru, the pace of life is much faster, with less connection to nature,” she shares.
This new relationship with the natural world has become one of the unexpected joys of her journey in Finland.
Despite the challenges of Finnish winter, it’s all part of Finland’s unique charm. The arrival of spring brings a noticeable shift, as the calm and joyful atmosphere warms with celebrations like Vappu, the lively student festival.
“I absolutely adore the spring and summer seasons here. Summer, in particular, is perfect for spending time with friends and embracing Finnish mökki (cabin) lifestyle,” Genesis says.
A Multicultural Learning Environment
One of the highlights of the Nursing program for Genesis is its diversity. Her class includes students from across the globe, including China, the UK, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Nigeria and Peru.
“It’s such a unique experience to meet so many people from different cultures. It makes the learning environment so much richer.”
A Bright Future in Finland
Genesis has excelled in her studies, receiving a scholarship from the Board of the Finnish Nurses’ Association Fund. She plans to work as a nurse in Finland after graduation and is already balancing her studies with a job teaching Spanish at a local adult education center. She is also looking forward to participate with the Finnish Nurses’ Association as a active student member in the near future.
When asked who nursing studies might suit, Genesis answers:
“It’s for someone who wants to challenge themselves in a safe environment. A nurse should be empathetic, love working with people, and be ready to help. A smile and a positive attitude also go a long way,” she adds with a smile.
Genesis Zamalloa is very determined and eager to learn new things. Her story shows that dreams can come true—no matter the distance, as long as one is ready to embrace challenges and grow through them.
* In Finland, it is recommended to take vitamin D supplements during the winter months due to the lack of sunlight.
